SpaceX To Launch "Up To 1 Million Satellites To Space" To Use As Data Centers For AI

Good morning!

Today's newsletter will be short.

SpaceX, the company behind Starlink, is working with the Federal Communications Commission to get up to 1 million satellites into orbit that will act as data centers for the ever-increasing demand for AI.

The Goal Is To Make AI Faster And Smarter While Saving The Environment

When you type "Write me a business plan," the AI is doing billions of calculations to predict which words should come next, one word at a time.

More computing power = faster responses and smarter answers.

It's like the difference between doing math with a calculator versus doing it in your head. Same problem, but one is WAY faster.

The problem?

AI is getting more powerful, which means it needs MORE computing power.

And we're literally running out of space and electricity to build these data centers fast enough.

That's where this plan from SpaceX comes in.

Here's how their proposed solution works:

SpaceX wants to put up to 1 million solar-powered data-centers in space instead of on the ground.

These satellites would orbit Earth at heights between 500 and 2,000 kilometers.

They'd be powered entirely solar powered.

These Solves 3 of The Biggest Problems We Currently Have to Sustainable AI

Problem #1: Not enough power.

AI data centers down here use massive amounts of electricity. We're talking enough to power entire cities.

SpaceX's orbital data centers tap into unlimited solar energy. No power bills. No fighting with local grids.

Problem #2: Too much heat.

Regular data centers need constant cooling. That means water, air conditioning, and even more electricity.

In space? The natural vacuum provides cooling. No water needed. No AC bills.

Problem #3: Not enough space.

We're literally running out of room for data centers on Earth.

Building a single massive AI data center requires hundreds of acres of land. Getting permits takes years. Communities don't want them in their neighborhoods.

Bottom line

They get unlimited clean energy and natural cooling by moving the computers to space.

For the planet, this is potentially huge.

No more burning fossil fuels to power AI. No water wasted on cooling systems. Less land taken up by massive server buildings.

This also means…

  • Cheaper AI tools - Lower operating costs could mean lower subscription prices

  • Faster AI responses - More computing power available means less waiting

  • 24/7 reliability - Solar power in space never runs out, so no outages from power grid issues

  • SpaceX can now offer this as an additional service. So if you own SpaceX or S&P 500 stocks, you have something to look forward to. But this is not financial advice.

This Isn't Happening Tomorrow...But It's Already Waiting For Approval

This isn't happening tomorrow. SpaceX just filed the application. The FCC still needs to approve it.

But if they do? We're talking about the biggest AI infrastructure project in history.

I just think it's incredible that we're literally moving AI computing to space.

What a time to be alive.

Talk soon,

Brian
